Discover the Dark Skies of Winter

Discover the wonder of dark winter skies at Hope Mountain Retreat (B&B)! With its idyllic rural situation at the edge of the Clwydian Range, Hope Mountain Retreat is the perfect location to enjoy an evening of stargazing, allowing you to reconnect with nature, and marvel at the majesty of a glittering, star-studded sky.

What you will learn about:

• Finding your way around the dark sky
• What’s in a winter sky
• Available equipment

At first glance, the night sky can appear to be a jumble of stars, but with a little know-how and practice, you will soon be able to uncover the wonders it holds. We are hoping for a clear night, so that once your eyes have adjusted to the darkness (this can take 15 to 20 minutes), you can start to explore the dark sky and discover its planets and star constellations. We have particularly chosen the 18th November as this is a quarter moon and is dark early, allowing sufficient time to observe the heavens, and not be up all night. A full moon is too bright and would block out most of what we would want to look at, whereas a quarter moon allows us to view Jupiter, Saturn, craters on the moon, and constellations such as Orion (weather permitting, of course).

What’s included

• Refreshments on arrival, including a bowl of homemade soup, tea and coffee throughout the evening.
• An information booklet ‘Written in the Stars” (A guide to constellations and   their Welsh tales)
• A talk and presentation by two local astronomers.

What you’ll need

• Please wear warm clothes – a hat, gloves and lots of layers!
• Sturdy shoes.
• Feel free to bring a reclining garden chair if you wish (ground blankets will be provided).
